I have been a personal trainer here at Chamisal for 20 years. Physical fitness is a life-long passion of mine. It began early on when at the age of 15 I began bicycle riding. I joined the Army in 1946.
I was fortunate to associate with other fitness enthusiasts. At the University of Maryland, I enrolled in a weight lifting course and learned from some of the strongest people I have ever known. Upon graduation I was back on active duty and served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division, where once again I associated with the most physically fit soldiers in the Army.
Bicycle riding continued to excite me so much so that I bought a bicycle in Italy where the finest bikes were made at that time. Once the snow melted and my skis were put away, I was back on my bicycle. In 1963 I made a bicycle trip to Amsterdam. It was a 1500-mile bike ride in 14 days where I averaged 111 miles a day.
Also while in Germany I had the good fortune to be stationed in Garmisch located in the foothills of the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain. I have been blessed to climb the Zugspitze three times with some physically fit friends.
I’ve been retired from military duty now for 28 years but physical fitness continues. The older we become the greater are the benefits from exercise. I believe this, I preach this, I live this. I was 66 years old when I hiked the Canyon rim-to-rim the first time. I celebrated my 70th birthday at Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the Canyon. Keep moving, keep smiling, the best is yet to come.
